Kassahun has obtained his PhD in mental health epidemiology from Addis Ababa University. He has completed a two years African Mental Health Research Initiative (AMARI) post-doctoral fellowship. Kassahun’s main research interests are clinical, social and economic outcomes of people with mental disorders. He is also interested in development or adaptation and evaluation of psycho-social interventions for improving the lives of people with mental disorders. He has also research experience on migration and health, with focus on the mental health of Ethiopian migrant returnees. Kassahun has more than 30 publications in the areas of psychology, mental health and migration. Kassahun is currently working as an associate professor and head of the School of Psychology in Addis Ababa University.
